There is no way that proc is the bottleneck on Vista. The device must have 1GB RAM which is the problem. Vista runs FINE on a Samsung Q1 with its lowly 900Mhz Pentium M... *as long as you have 2GB RAM*
If OEMs want to build Vista devices, they need to ship them with 2GB RAM.
Pandas everywhere are cursing this latest 'innovation' from Asus... what a waste of effort. Never understood why anyone would want to enclose a computer in such a poor conductor of heat.
I am interested in the NIA. But my main question is what else can you do with it. To reduce CTS it would be great if you could just type with it. I have never been happy with voice recognition so far and it doesnt work well in an office with other people. But if these products could be made with enough input recognition to at least get the letters numbers and punctuation of the keyboard I would buy it in a hearbeat. Imagine taking notes in class without bothering people with the keys and writing documents and emails quickly and silently.
I just picked an OCZ NIA up.. I know this is an old thread.. I haven't spent hours training it yet but I am anticipating some interesting hacks out soon and maybe some firmware hacks since this is a pretty cheap item now. Anyway, I will review further on my own site as I play with it, you can catch that at http://automatedhome.ca">http://automatedhome.ca and soon at augmenting-reality.com where I intend to try out all these devices to put together a good William Gibson style portable computer complete with Vusix 920AV glasses and some Nvidia or android or Iphone device at the center.. anyway, more to come son on what I can get this toy to do..;)
You can get nifty little wooden USB sticks from several places if you like wood with your IT. I have seen www.flashsticks.co.uk These would go well with one of these lap tops :)
Could you ever actually see that replacing keyboard + mouse? I mean, the aiming part, which you still apparently have to do with the mouse, is the hard part, not the movement, which is what the NIA is being used for.
I don't see how this could be used for aiming efficiently, due to its seemingly digital nature (mouse control is analog).
I also see any advantage being gained from the potentially increased response time being outweighed by the fact that you now have a disconnect between what you're using to aim (your hand) and what you're using to fire (your facial movements). What good is fast responses if the timing of the responses is off? If there was any advantage to this sort of a setup, the military would have been using it long ago.
certainly, it is not the ideal solution, having to make funny faces in order to interface with a computer - but it is just a starting step. i am glad asus is doing this - it will help popularize the idea itself, even if this particular implementation is rather basic.
non-invasive approaches are getting better and better, but will never get as good as an implant. i personally believe we will eventually all have bci implants. i am sure brain-computer interfaces are the future, and will revolutionize our lives to an extent most of us can't even imagine yet.
there are so many possibilities in this technology that i can probably spend hours, if not days, talking about it... but i'll spare you the torture for now :p
A brain implant would be far more advanced than this little gadget, I agree. Personally, I'm very intrigued by the idea, but I think there are those out there who would be horrified by idea of cybernetics.
